Pomeroy’s made it as far west as Greensburg PA, taking over the Westmorland Mall branch of Greensburg-based Troutmann’s. Troutmann’s had stores in downtown Butler, Clearview Mall/Butler, downtown Connelsville, and possibly Laurel Mall in Uniontown.
A fascinating side note: The Tripplett household, which was involved in management of Troutman’s, cut a deal with Allied to acquire and run the successful Latrobe, New Castle and Butler stores. The family made a valiant effort to run the 3 stores under the Troutman’s nameplate, and tried to keep a decent selection of merchandise. Unfortunately it was difficult to product three far flung downtown department stores and the stores shut down a few years later on.
The Laurel Mall in Connellsville held the only branch store of long time downtown Uniontown PA anchor shop Metzlers. Metzlers had a four flooring and basement flagship in Uniontown and was constantly considered a better shop; at one time Metzlers ran a multi-level furniture store diagonally throughout Main Street from their department store. Metzlers kept a full service department store downtown up until the late 1980s; even in the last years the store was equipped with much better quality brands, although it was too little to provide designer lines. The Laurel Shopping center store dropped its house goods department and moved workplaces to that area. Laurel Shopping center lasted a couple of years following the closure of the downtown shop and the decline of the shopping mall itself.

I understand that Pomeroy’s took over the Westmorland Shopping mall branch but not the downtown Greensburg shop. Moving from Cincinnati, my Daddy, J Edward Murray was President of the Eastern division up until his death in 1983. The store was taken down, in truth the whole shopping complex and to this date I have no concept what became of the plaque.
